Costa Rica is a small country in Central America which is distinguished by the implementation for many years of a policy of safeguarding its natural resources to protect its tropical flora and the diversity of its fauna. In addition, this small country is characterized by the kindness and benevolence of its inhabitants.

Costa Rica is located between Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south with 125 miles of the Caribbean coast to the east and 750 miles of the Pacific coast to the west. Samara is a charming little village in the province of Guanacaste, on the Pacific edge of the Nicoya Peninsula. It is located 4 h. by car from the capital San José.

Localisation.

The Hotel Flying Crocodile, at 6 miles north of Samara, occupies an exceptional location in a splendid 2 hectare tropical park inhabited by a large number of animals and surrounded by mangrovesIt is just a 7-minute walk from the unspoiled Buena Vista Beach on the Nicoya Peninsula in the Pacific coast.

From the Samara petrol station located on the Nicoya road in the direction of Nicoya traffic towards Samara:  Road 3

  • Take the first unpaved road on the right after the petrol station. 
  • Go over the bridge, then follow the road.
  • At “Barco Quebrado”, take the road on the left.
  • At bar “le Coyote”, turn right, then follow the signs to the hotel.

In the dry season, take one of the 2 shortcuts noted on the map by crossing the rio by car.

Formalities.

For your travel to Costa Rica, you need to have with you a passport  which must be valid usually 6 months after the end of your trip. Currently, we advise you to consult the website of your embassy in order to benefit from up-to-date information concerning any additional required documents.

Weather.​

The tropical climate of Guanacaste is very pleasant with temperatures between 23 °and over 30 ° all year round. It is characterized by a dry season from November to April and a green season from May to November with sometimes fleeting showers welcome after a hot day.

Car rental.

We advise you to rent a 4×4 car with GPS, due to the state of the road network in Costa Rica. Indeed, the main roads and secondary roads are fairly well maintained, however you will have to take unpaved roads or even tracks and cross small rios.

Your passport and your driving license  will be required. You do not need an international driving license. However if you are renting a car when you arrived in Costa Rica, verify that your bank card is a credit card and not a debit card as that does not allow you to rent a car.(noted in small on your card).

There are many car rental companies in San José, but you can also contact the rental companies in Samara.

Language

The official language is Spanish, however many Costa Ricans speak English. French is also widely used in the Samara region. Spanish, English and French are spoken at the hotel.

Phone.

To call a correspondent in Costa Rica while you are in Costa Rica: dial the 8 digits of your correspondent’s number for exemple 1111 1111 without 506 which is the country code.

To call Costa Rica from abroad: Dial 00 506 followed by the 8 digits of your correspondent’s number, for example 00 506 1111 1111 except for Quebec (011).

To call foreigners from Costa-Rica: dial 00 followed by the country code (Ex 11) and the number of your correspondent without 0 For example 00 11 1 1111 1111.

To recharge your mobile phones, it is advisable to have a voltage converter plug from 220 volts to 110 volts.

Change

The local currency is the Colon due to the discovery of Costa Rica by Christopher Columbus in 1502.

US $ are also accepted.

Restaurant

Many small restaurants called Sodas are spread all over the country even in remote places. The main products Costa Rican dishes consist of are rice, black beans, cassava, many vegetables, chicken, beef, eggs and fish without forgetting all the tropical fruits such as pineapples, mangoes, fruits passion, watermelons and plantain bananas … The cooked products are always very fresh. You must absolutely taste the Gallo Pinto ( See photo), the Casado and the fish cevichesIt is also quite easy to eat vegan because Costa Ricans eat plenty of plant-based dishes.

Note that tap water is safe to drink in Costa Rica.
